Superman: Legacy actor David Corenswet can be seen wearing costumes with and without the red trunks in Superman fan art.

Although it may take some time before an official image of the outfit is released, Superman: Legacy star David Corenswet is seen wearing a variety of outfits both with and without the red trunks in fan art.

The image was shared on X by YoleocomicsDC and Games, who cite artist 21xfour as the creator through a translation. It shows Corenswet dressed in various Superman outfits; the first two are based on the classic Superman ensemble, though the latter has a larger “S” and is more saturated, and the third is inspired by the Fleischer costume. The last two shots, however, are different from the last two, as they do not have the red trunks.

In response to a fan who inquired about whether the Man of Steel would be seen wearing the trunks, Legacy writer-director James Gunn said, “Undecided. We are doing incredible amounts of concept art now with both and we’ll use whatever version looks best. For me, the most important aspects of the character go beyond trunks!” It is interesting to note that Gunn’s hint persuaded fans that Corenswet would in fact be donning the trunks.

More recently, Gunn responded to a fan’s question on Threads regarding whether Superman’s costume would be “more classic, modern, or something totally new and different,” saying, “All of the above,” though he did not elaborate. When asked if he thought there was a chance that the costume would be revealed prior to principal photography, Gunn said, “Zero-point-zero.”

Regarding Legacy, Gunn declared that it will not be an origin story, saying that he “[thinks] we have seen [Superman’s] origin enough in film at this time!” In addition, Gunn mentioned that principal photography for the film will start in March 2024 and refuted certain parts of a recent logline that stated, “Superman, a cub reporter in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.” The director also said he was not sure where the logline originated.

We shoot in March, and although I am grateful that our production team worked tirelessly every day to keep things going through the strikes, there are elements of truth in it (obviously based on things I have said in the past) and I would not characterize the plot in this way, nor call Clark a cub reporter; he is a thirty-year-old full-on reporter. Forces forced us to stop several times, and if we had, we would never have made July 2025.”

On July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy will be released in theaters.
