James Gunn, a well-known filmmaker and comic book fan who worked on films including The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Peacemaker, has penned the introduction to a new encyclopedia about the DC Universe.

Gunn discussed the new book Strange and Unsung All-Stars of the DC Multiverse: A Pictorial Encyclopedia on X (previously Twitter). This book will take readers on a voyage into the less-traveled reaches of DC’s pantheon. Stephanie Williams is a celebrated comic book writer best known for her work on Nubia: Queen of the Amazons and Wakanda.

Gunn confirmed in a tweet that he will write the book’s foreword. The director highlighted his passion for the less well-known DC Comics characters, who sparked his imagination as a child, in a lengthy statement that was included with a copy of the book. The 240-page book will feature a number of characters, including Arm-Fall-Off-Boy, Colonel Computron, and the Mod Gorilla Boss.

Earlier this year, Gunn and DC Studio co-CEO Peter Safran outlined the company’s ambitious schedule. Films like the upcoming Superman: Legacy, which will be directed by Gunn himself, a new version of The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority are among the exciting titles on the schedule. In addition to this, Max will also be working on the animated series Creature Commandos as well as Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, and Paradise Lost.

Gunn, a well-known comic book aficionado, has regularly tried to elevate underdog characters. This was reflected in the new DC Universe, which will put Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman on the same platform with heroes like Blue Beetle. Seasoned author Jim Lee recently acknowledged Gunn for dramatically improving the sales of comics like Blue Beetle, Peacemaker, and others. In comparison to the studio’s earlier work and the MCU, Gunn’s take on the DCU’s strategy is considerably different. The lack of conventional hidden identities in the Marvel Universe has been brought to light, and he seeks to revive the fantasy component once more in superhero tales.
