The DC cinematic universe has struggled to achieve the commercial and critical success that Marvel films have, but Snyder’s grounded interpretations of iconic DC heroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman have found a dedicated fan base. After years of lobbying, Warner Bros. agreed to spend $70 million to create a new cut of “Justice League” based on Snyder’s original script.

The 2017 theatrical release of “Justice League” received lukewarm reviews from critics and fans of Snyder’s previous DC universe films. Though Snyder oversaw the majority of the film’s production, a series of personal tragedies, including the death of Snyder’s daughter, forced him to abandon the project before it was finished.

Warner Bros. hired “Avengers” director Joss Whedon to finish “Justice League,” which resulted in significant changes to the story and reshoots. Several cast members have spoken out against Whedon’s behavior on set, with Cyborg actor Ray Fisher vowing never to work on another film overseen by DC Films President Walter Hamada, who oversaw an investigation into Whedon’s behavior after the film was released.

Despite the completion of Snyder’s cut, the director has told fans that a continuation of his “Justice League” franchise is unlikely. Gal Gadot played Wonder Woman again in “Wonder Woman 1984” earlier this year, and Ezra Miller is set to start filming “The Flash” in April 2021. The upcoming “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson will have no connection to “Justice League,” while Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams are reportedly working on a new “Superman” film.

What is the difference between ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ and the original?

“Zack Snyder’s Justice League” differs from the original film in several ways, including the addition of a significant appearance by the DC villain Darkseid and a new look for the alien antagonist Steppenwolf.

Cyborg, a hero first seen in DC films in “Justice League,” is also said to play an important role in the revised story. Snyder has also revealed the return of Batman’s archenemy, the Joker, as played by Jared Leto.

Snyder has stated that his version of “Justice League” will not use any of the reshoot material directed by Joss Whedon, but will instead include a large amount of new footage to match his original script. Snyder’s “Justice League” will reportedly be four hours long, roughly double the length of the original. Snyder also hinted that the film might end on a cliffhanger, as it is part of a series of films, such as “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

On March 18, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” premiered exclusively on HBO Max. It is available for unlimited viewing as part of a $15 monthly HBO Max subscription. Most HBO cable subscribers have free access to HBO Max through their TV provider account.
