One facet of Lex Luthor’s appearance in Superman: Legacy is revealed by James Gunn.

In the next movie Superman: Legacy, Lex Luthor will appear more like the iconic portrayals of the character.

Superman’s arch-nemesis has always been shown as being completely bald, from the first DC comic books to a number of animated series and motion pictures. Jesse Eisenberg’s version of the character, who had long hair, was one of the versions of Lex that reimagined different looks for the character. When a fan asked Gunn on the social media platform Threads whether the DCU’s Lex would be bald, the director replied, “ofc,” which is internet slang for “of f***ing course.”

After the director announced that Nicholas Hoult would be joining the DCU as Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy, Gunn clarified that the intention is to “create a Lex that will be different from anything [fans have] ever seen before and will never forget.” No information has been released regarding how Lex will fit into the story of Superman: Legacy, and it is unclear how the character will differ from previous incarnations.

Eisenberg’s portrayal of Lex Luthor on screen was the continuation of roles previously played by Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey. The character was also portrayed on television by Michael Rosenbaum in the popular series Smallville, which Gunn had previously deemed the best ever. More recently, Lex was portrayed in the DC shows Titans, Supergirl, and Superman & Lois by Titus Welliver, Jon Cryer, and Michael Cudlitz, respectively.

David Corenswet, the newest actor to play the Man of Steel on the big screen, will co-star with Hoult in Superman: Legacy. Other confirmed cast members for the film include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy Begins the DCU’s Filmography

The first full-length film in the newly formed DCU will be Superman: Legacy, but the continuity will begin in 2024 with the release of the animated series Creature Commandos on Max, which is set in the same universe as Superman: Legacy and features characters that will also be featured in live-action DCU films in the future, starring the same actors in new roles. Superman: Legacy will open in theaters on July 11, 2025.
