Speaking candidly, Jason Momoa discusses why the Aquaman actor would be “perfect” in the role of Lobo in the DCU. (lobo jason Momoa)

Jason Momoa is excited to potentially portray another DC character in the DCU even though he will shortly be bidding farewell to Aquaman.

Since there are currently no plans for a sequel to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the DCEU timeline appears to be coming to an end with the release of the Aquaman sequel. In order to promote the film’s release, Momoa went on Tuesday with co-star Patrick Wilson to an interview with Fandango. When asked if he would be interested in playing Lobo, given that he has previously expressed interest in the role, Momoa recalled how, when he was first approached for the Aquaman role in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, he initially believed that was who he was up for. The actor also admits that he was disappointed to learn that the role was actually Aquaman.

“I auditioned for Batman, and I almost did not do it, because I was like, ‘This is silly. It is not going to be me. Why am I auditioning for Batman?’ But it was just a regular audition, and then I get called in right after Affleck gets announced, and I am like, ‘Oh, f***. Of course I am going to play the bad guy.’ So, I was like, ‘Yeah, I will come in, beat ’em up [Batman and Superman], and die, like I do.” Momoa said.

“You know who you are going to play?’ I was told when I got called into the office. I said, ‘Yes, Lobo! Of course. He is the only one who can fight Batman and Superman.’ [Director Zack Snyder was] like, ‘What? Lobo? No, he is not in this universe.’ I was like, ‘What? Who the hell am I supposed to play?’ And then, I wish he would have taped it, because he said, ‘Aquaman.’” Momoa continued.

Momoa sought explanations on the vision, and upon learning that this Aquaman was different from many of the original comic book depictions, the actor saw potential in the role and quickly jumped on board, characterizing this Aquaman as a tattooed “traveler” and more of a “renegade,” who would do things like “punch Batman in the face” and “kiss Wonder Woman.” Given that Aquaman went on to make a tremendous splash at the box office, the casting was deemed successful enough, despite the fact that it meant his ambition to play Lobo would remain unfulfilled.

“You know, Lobo was always my favorite character in comic books, and even though I do not collect them as much as I used to, I always wanted to play him because I thought, ‘Hey, this is the perfect role,'” Momoa remarked. “Listen, if they call and ask me to play him, it is a f*** yeah. I have not received that call, so I do not want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I am there.”

On December 22, 2023, Momoa will play Aquaman in the film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which may be her last appearance as the superhero.
