Thanks to Avengers: Endgame, there will always be a point of contention among fans when it comes to time travel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In interviews after the film’s release, the Russo brothers and the writers (Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely) said that they had never agreed on a single, unified vision because the competing laws it generated for space and time.

Fans were left wondering if Loki Season 1 will make the concept of time travel more coherent because there wasn’t a clear understanding of it. That hinted at the branching histories that Smart Hulk had mentioned and how they would exist as different realities, so it sort of did. Yet, Marvel Studios goes against what Endgame attempted to establish in Loki 2 debut. Fans get yet another puzzling plot hole as a result, which makes Smart Hulk’s rules even more muddled.

When the Avengers planned their time heist, Bruce Banner from Endgame tried to explain the laws of time travel while in Smart Hulk form. He explained that altering multiple timelines would be the same as creating entirely new planets. The split timelines that He Who Remains mentioned in Loki are these. To keep things in order, the Temporal Variance Authority (TVA) would trim these. While the TVA, manipulated by Judge Renslayer and He Who Remains, didn’t have to eliminate everyone, certain worlds would be pruned.

The quote from Smart Hulk goes, “If you travel to the past, that past becomes your future, and your previous present becomes the past, which can no longer be influenced by your new future.” Yet the movie itself had an issue with this from the start. For instance, in accordance with this rule, Captain America shouldn’t have handed Sam Wilson his shield. This is so that Steve Rogers could not encounter Sam and Bucky in the future after he had returned to the past and remained with Peggy Carter. Once he stayed behind, he would have shaped a new destiny, whether it was good or bad.

The purpose of this was to disprove the bootstrap paradox, which holds that events in the past can have an impact on events in the future and vice versa with no apparent repercussions. Although ripples from either point shouldn’t affect or have an impact on one another, it disproves the theory of the butterfly effect. Smart Hulk characterizes time as non-linear in this sense. He criticizes movies like The Terminator and Back to the Future for sticking to one timeline, saying that they get it wrong. The fact that Loki Season 1 often referred to the regular MCU’s existence as the Sacred Timeline makes it clear how simple it is for MCU fans to keep making this error.

During the time heist, the MCU did apply Smart Hulk’s reasoning in other situations. A few things went wrong, including a brawl between two Steve Rogers. But, those were dismissed as branching realities that did not matter to the viewers. possibly even those TVA pruned. That being said, in Season 2, Episode 1, “Ouroboros,” Loki makes the same linear blunder when he time-travels to the TVA. In order to receive Ke Huy Quan’s O.B. to resolve this problem, he travels back in time. O.B. is inspired to create the Temporal Aura Extractor there. O.B. then recalls the conversation with Loki and the fact that he really created such a device in the present with Owen Wilson’s Mobius.

This is against Smart Hulk’s laws because it includes the past, present, and future affecting each other in a direct path. There is now a simple solution to correct this. The series often emphasizes how time functions differently in the TVA, so perhaps things start to become linear here. The Temporal Loom, which transforms unprocessed time into physical time, may also be to blame. In essence, the TVA prunes from the web that connects different timeframes. The second season of Loki confirms that the Multiverse started to unravel uncontrollably after Sylvie killed He Who Remains.

There are more timelines and branched realities than there should be, which is overloading the Loom. It is the cause of the TVA’s power fluctuations. The system now has a technological defect and an engineering mistake, confirming the TVA’s dysfunction. As a result, the series can eventually explain Loki’s linear effects as a result of this mistake with the Loom. It would be a convenient but ingenious cop-out, but only because the TVA’s activities are still so poorly understood. The MCU can afterwards refit and modify as necessary. Nonetheless, it seems like even more of an unneeded complication than Endgame did.

Loki 2 Could Not Be Able to Keep Time Once Again

What is concerning is the Loom’s rapid proliferation, which compromises the TVA’s integrity. It’s impossible to predict if the TVA will endure now that the Judges and staff, including B-15 and X-5, have realized they were all stolen versions who had been brainwashed to carry out He Who Remains’ will. Several members want to hunt Sylie as well, thus it appears that a civil war is developing. This implies that the company might not exist much longer. So, one has to consider who will curate things going forward if there are no timekeepers.

By that time, the time travel equation must be solved, and boundaries must be established. So it appears that there will be plenty additional temporal hijinks with the release of Secret Wars and The Kang Dynasty. Regrettably, the MCU currently lacks even a basic understanding of the foundational elements, including story lines and sub-arcs that shouldn’t be too challenging to develop. In the end, fans do want a unified understanding of what bending space and time means in the MCU, so one can only hope that these blatant plot holes and inconsistencies are patched together.

Kevin Wright, the executive producer of Loki 2, explains how the team unraveled the riddles of Season 2 to keep fans interested without giving away too much.

The season premiere introduces many plot threads to unravel, including how Loki 2 (Tom Hiddleston) began time slipping within the TVA (something that should be impossible), what exactly Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) has done to the organization, where Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) has been since her confrontation with He Who Remains, what became of Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and what the true histories of the TVA agents themselves are. There is obviously a lot to discover, and Wright talked about how he and his colleagues creators went about unraveling these riddles. In an interview with The Wrap, he said, “If you explain too much, the viewer has — it feels like they have to carry it.

Wright went on, “The thing that was always most important to us was how simply we could explain that in a line or two of dialogue, when necessary, so that audiences go “OK, that kind of makes sense.” We are taking big concepts, we’re getting into time loops, and timey-wimey stuff starts happening big time in this. As it goes on, I’m going to store that in the back of my mind.”

Said he, “We would constantly ask ourselves, “Is this writing confusing? Or is it fascinating? That may sound stupid, but you’ll recognize it when you see it. And so, if anything ever seemed a little unclear, we would decide, “OK, well, maybe we need a little one more line here.” It was typically about getting rid of lines.”

Director Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were praised by Wright for “straddling the line between curiosity and perplexity.”

He said, “This is the Justin and Aaron thing. “The audience will respond, “I know they want me to track that,” if you draw out enough information, leave it compelling, and make a professional enough picture. I’m going to keep track of it, store it away, and have faith that they’ll pick it up later. I believe that episode 1 hinted at something similar with what Loki 2 sees happening in the future.”

There are more tales about the God of Mischief to be told.

Wright had previously mentioned how the first two seasons of Loki were “two chapters of the same book” and made a suggestion that if Marvel would permit it, there were more stories to be told with the God of Mischief. He also hinted that the TVA might feature in upcoming Marvel Studios films, as the group is already expected to appear in Deadpool 3 alongside Owen Wilson’s Mobius.
